about

The original nerdy masterpiece has been freshly remastered in 2021!

-----------------------------
The Legend Begins Again
-----------------------------

11 tracks full of nonstop Nintendo memories to bob your head to.

Following up on the underground success of Hatter’s Zelda song “Ganon Slayer" originally released on YouTube in 2004, this album came out in early 2007 and takes the listener on a journey to the world of eight bit superheroes, with each song describing the game from the main character’s view. Most of the classics have been covered here, and certain punchlines and metaphors will have oldschool cats laughing out loud.

Featuring the actual in-game NES music ripped out, remixed, and given fresh new beats, the instrumentals alone will have you grinning. A release that definitely landed MadHatter and Scrub Club Records into a then budding Nerdcore community.

This album is packed with so much '80s time-warp freshness that Stephen Hawking’s head exploded from inside the astral plane!

A Bit of History:
------------------

Originally planned for release in 2006, this side project was put on the afterburner in order to make way for other group projects at the time. After those projects were cancelled or rescheduled, the actual original recording and mixing of this album from scratch took less than 4 months on Scrub Club’s new studio equipment.

“Ganon Slayer” was first released in 2004 just as a single Hatter thought a few people might like, since he was a hardcore Zelda fan. In just a week after its appearance on Soundclick in 2005, the track rose to the top of the charts and landed #1 in the Electronic: Games genre, beating out 4,241 other submissions. In the Electronic genre itself, it climbed to #10, beating out 197,534 other submissions.

During Scrub Club’s live concerts at the time, you could usually catch Hatter and his cohorts on stage, running around with props from certain games. A sword and shield during "Ganon Slayer," golden coins during "Pipe Dreams," and sometimes zappers and old controllers for other songs.

The photoshoot for this album was hilarious to do and got a good amount of attention. Characters were played out by Scrub Club members and friends for a few goofy hours in downtown Wichita, KS, and they were asked to be in several random shots with passers by (including someone's senior pictures). MadHatter was Mario, KnightDetective was Luigi, Zadi was Princess Toadstool, Chester was Donkey Kong, William Buckley was Snake, Wookie was Link, and our buddy Amy was Princess Zelda. Surprisingly, none of us were arrested (it helped that the photoshoot ended up landing on April Fool’s Day).

This marks the first time Shelshocker ever recorded, which was during the chorus of “Unstoppable.” She was also featured on a Sinister Six song.

The song “AFS,” which you truly have to hear to understand this fact, was written, produced, recorded, and mixed all within a period of 45 minutes. Also note that this track is ridiculous and painful on purpose. Sorry in advance!

“Bullets and Buckshot” - I would like to claim that this has never been done before, a Hip-Hop song about a western videogame. Triple odd scenario. I'm pretty sure that’s a first, haha.

-------------

In 2020, Ville from Surrender to the Sound Records reached out to Hatter about a possible vinyl release on the 13th anniversary of the album, and it has lead here to this remaster! Enjoy this album, and if you wish, grab a vinyl copy as they are released.

When is the sequel coming? Well... Very much in the style of Duke Nukem Forever's development period - It will be done when it's done (and much better than Duke Nukem Forever, I promise).

MadHatter Austin, Texas

MadHatter is a Videogame historian and all-around nerd.

An early pioneer of the Nerdcore genre, when he realized that making game-related music was highly relatable to folks in 2004, he stuck to his guns. Nintendo Zappers, that is.

He stopped making and performing music due to past health issues, but he's back in top form now while working as a retro archivist.
